My rehabilitation journey began after one of the most frightening experiences of my life.
I developed a severe case of sepsis along with a serious stomach infection and several other health complications. My condition became so critical that I spent days in intensive care, was placed on oxygen, and was intubated while doctors worked to stabilize me.
There were moments when the outcome was uncertain.
After leaving the hospital, I was admitted to Bella Terra Elmhurst to continue my recovery. My goals were clear: rebuild my strength, come off oxygen, regain my independence, and safely return home.
Looking back, I can honestly say that I received everything I needed and more.
From the very beginning, I felt cared for.
The moment I arrived, people introduced themselves, explained what to expect, and made me feel welcome. Throughout my stay, every person I encountered treated me with kindness, patience, and compassion.
In fact, I often told people that I felt surrounded by angels.
Whether they were nurses, therapists, housekeeping staff, dietary team members, administrators, or caregivers, I truly believed that each person had been called to help others. Their compassion was evident in everything they did.
My therapy goals focused on regaining strength and endurance. I worked hard to come off oxygen, improve my mobility, walk longer distances, navigate stairs, and strengthen my arms and legs. Physical therapy became one of the highlights of my day because it gave me the opportunity to see how much progress I was making.
Every accomplishment brought me one step closer to home.
The therapy team encouraged me, guided me, and helped me believe in what I could achieve. Blaine, one of my therapists, was especially wonderful. He helped me understand the process, answered my questions, and made me feel comfortable from the very beginning.
Another staff member I’ll never forget is Christian, one of the evening nurses. He went above and beyond to help me, especially when I was struggling with my CPAP equipment. He patiently worked through multiple mask adjustments, helped organize everything I needed, and made sure I was comfortable. His kindness and dedication meant so much during a difficult time.
What impressed me most about Bella Terra Elmhurst was the consistency of the care.
If I needed something, someone responded. If I had a question, someone answered it. If I wasn’t feeling well, someone checked on me. Every interaction reinforced that I wasn’t going through recovery alone.
Of course, after nearly three weeks away from home, I was eager to leave. My biggest goal from day one was to get strong enough to go home.
I’ll never forget the joy I felt when the team finally told me I had met my goals and was ready for discharge.
It was music to my ears.
Bella Terra Elmhurst helped me regain my strength, restore my independence, and move forward after one of the most serious health challenges I’ve ever faced.
If someone asked whether I would recommend Bella Terra Elmhurst, my answer would be absolutely yes. The facility was clean, the staff was exceptional, and the care I received exceeded every expectation I had.
Most importantly, they helped me get back home.
